YOSHIO OKUYAMA - ON MY SCULPTURE - Renaissance

Renaissance
- solid sculptural volume (intent) and transformation of abstract into a living organism (vitality)

This early work, “Renaissance”, expresses the movement of energy between two separated volumes.
It is very clear which is the generater and which the receipient. The movement of energy is almost one directional.

One (generator) is expresssed as a sharp shape like a thrown arrow, and the other (recipient) as receiving its force.
After that, I began to wonder whether I could perpetuate the energy flow by making it reciprocal, circulating from both sides.

Then, at the same time, I wondered whether I could express this physical volume and line combination not as abstract shapes of inorganic volumes and lines, but as having organic elements expressing life-forms.
This is linked to a later work “Image of spring in stone”.
